Lossless JPEG compressed - convert to - uncompressed

  • We save the images as Lossless JPEG in the conquest pacs.
When sending the imgages (CT) to an other pacs or to our Treatment Planning System the images are decompressed, But:

    1. in fact the images are uncompressed after transmission (you can see it from file size)
    2. but the dicom header remains unchanged (the header still reads "Lossless JPEG compression")

This causes an error when importing the data to our Planning System (Pinnacle):
e.g. Siemens CT,MR can be read in but GE CT-images cannot be read in (due to the: "Lossless JPEG compression").

I need a solution to get really uncompressed Images from the PACS!

    Thank's,
    Frank

  • Hi Frank,

apparantly pinnacle (incorrectly?) reads a compression 'history' tag, not the transfer syntax. You can try to disable the internal decompressor (see manual) and see what happens.

  • I tried both, with and without internal decompressor, it didn't change anything!
BTW, I don't think it's a 'history' tag, but I'm not sure! It is the TAG (0008,2111)!
The TAG is transmitted, even if I select NKI compression!!

But I found a solution, if I transfer a JPEG-Compressed Image to an other conquestPACS via net and perform then NKI compression the 'JPEG-Compressed TAG' remains, but, the images can be read in now by Pinnacle! So, Pinnacle has not only a problem with the TAG but with something else I don't know!

Not nice but it works. It was better to get rid of that TAG and that other issue! May be there is a bug?

  • Hi,

The Tag is named "Derivation Description" and should not be interpreted by Pinnacle. Very strange that a second server should make any difference. What happens if you make that server "uncompressed"?

Jpeg is standard and allow you to read images form disk yourself
NKI compression guaranteed does not change any tags, is very reliable and fast, but you cannot read the images then outside conquest.
