DICOM Server error when transferring large files

  • Hello,
I am using the Conquest DICOM Server software to transfer sequences of RAW images. It seems there is a memory limitation or a maximum number of images allowed in the sequence within the server software that causes an error when transferring large amounts of data at one time. I have successfully transferred files with about 200 images, but when transferring a file with 300 images, the dgate.exe process reaches about 650MB in size and then ends, and within the Conquest interface, the server status reports an error: "Client Error: Unknown Command:1 Connection Terminated". I have looked through the documentation and have found no reference to this error, or any limitations of file size. Please let me know if there is a way for me to correct this, or at least if these limitations really exist.

I am using the Windows version of the software on a PC with 2 GB of RAM (recently upgraded from 1 GB).

    Thanks for your help,
    Alan

  • Hi,

We have not run into this issue before. You are talking about one single dicom object (one large single file)? If so, can you let use download a sample file somewhere?

Since the entire object is loaded into memory (and maybe twice) prior to transfer I assume there is a limit due to avaible RAM.

If the software makes a copy of a dicom object than that would stop working indeed around such a size (the memory limit of a windows process is about 1.5 GB in practice).

  • Hi Marcel,
    Thank you for your reply.

To clarify a little, I am using the Conquest software only on the receiving end of the transfer of the DICOM file. The sending meachine is the x-ray unit that acqires the image sequence. The DICOM objects I am refering to are a single large DICOM file that contains a large amount of images.

Unfortunately I will not be able to provide a sample file, since I am unable to access the data directly on the x-ray unit.

The computer running the Conquest Software has 2GB of RAM currently installed, so I believe that even in this case it should be sufficient to handle the data, even if a copy of the DICOM object is made. The files contain 300 uncompressed images (1024x1024x2) + DICOM header (~630MB).

I have monitored the process's allocated memory, and I see that it reaches about 650MB in size when it stops. This is near the expected file size, so it seems that the file is being completely sent. For smaller files that transfer successfully, it seems the dgate process's memory allocation reaches about the expected file size and slowly decreases as the file is being written to the hard disk.

Also, a side effect of this is once the error occurs, any subsequent file sent from that x-ray unit, of any size, results in the same error, until the Conquest DICOM Server is killed and restarted. I don't know if this information provides any clues.

    Cheers,
    Alan

  • Hi Marcel,
No compression or forwarding are being used in the transfer. It should pretty much be a straight forward direct transfer from the x-ray unit to the server computer from what I can tell.

    Thanks,
    Alan

  • Hi Marcel,
Following is the header dump from on of the transmitted files (200 images).

    Cheers,
    Alan
