iQ-View temp directory

  • Hello,
Apologies if I am posting in the wrong area. Recently we had a user who thought it was a bright idea to delete files from the local server directory (In our case C:\Program Files (x86)\iQ-VIEW\Server\Database\*) in order to clear some space. While researching this I found a directory (C:\ProgramData\DICOMReader\temp*) which has many folders with 8 digit numbers. Within each of these folders I find files with the same names as the folders in the server database location but instead of folders, they are files with a '.2' file extension.

I noticed that the temp folder is 1.2TB in size and the server database is 546GB (after user deleting files) If I am correct this temp folder is where everything gets stored after the DicomReader scans files but before it is imported into the database. My questions are as follows:

    1. Is there any way to recover the deleted data from these .2 files?
    2. Since this data does not seem to be used at all after the import to the database, can we delete the data in the temp directory to clear up space without harming the real data and functionality of iQ-View?

  • As this is a real support case, I suggest that you contact the local reseller from whom you have purchased the copies of iQ-VIEW and DICOMReader. This is a bit too complex to be discussed here.

What I can say is the following:

      - If I understand you correctly, all the data was only kept in the iQ-VIEW local imagebox. If that's the case and you want or need to archive the data, I would assume that you make back-ups of the imagebox (or the hard disk) at regular intervals. Could you just restore one of those back-ups to make up for the lost data?

      - iQ-VIEW is NOT a PACS and should not be used to archive all your DICOM data. It should generally contain in its database only those studies that are currently read (plus any priors needed in addition). A PACS is usually a server where a user cannot easily delete data, it provides possibilities to distribute data within a medical network, and there are usually back-up strategies, planning for the desaster recovery.

      - As a PACS, we can recommend the use of our iQ-WEBX. And you are lucky since a new version of the software has been released just a few days ago.

      - If you wish to delete studies that are stored in the iQ-VIEW local imagebox, you need to do that from within iQ-VIEW. Deleting the image folders will result in a corrupt database as the study registrations will still exist in the database file.

      - The Temp folder in the DICOMReader ProgramData directory is not connected to the iQ-VIEW installation, as you correctly assumed. If the data is still available there, you might be able to import it into iQ-VIEW via "Filesystem". But I cannot recommend this procedure, as this is a massive amount of data.

      - In general, yes, there is no need to keep the temp files that were already imported. This will just clog up the hard disk. In your case, I would suggest you keep - or at least back-up - the data for the time being. Maybe it will help recovering the data that was deleted by the user.

You should really think about a real archive. Ask your local reseller. I'm sure they will be able to give you all the options and provide you with a solution that fits your environment and workflow.

  • Thank you very much for the information Sabine, This answers my questions. We did have a PACS server but our local reseller sort've dropped the ball and did no sort of testing during installation so now months down the road we are finding transfers to PACS have not been occuring since Day 1. We are not using PACS how a normal medical facility would, iQ-VIEW more than suits our needs and meshes very well into our current infrastructure so far, PACS is just intended for far more than we would ever use. But I will definitely keep your recommendations in mind should we find a need for the added features.

  • I'm glad to hear that you found the information helpful.

So, do you still need assistance in the matter of restoring the data that the user has accidentally deleted? We have checked our customer relation systems and were not able to locate the licenses you must have purchased with the information your user profile provides. So, we assume that the iQ-VIEW and DICOMReader licenses were purchased under a different name than "Compass Consulting".

If necessary, our US support team would get in touch with you. Let us know.

  • Thanks for the update. It seems that you are on the right track with the network storage in order to more easily create backups of the database.

Still, keep in mind that iQ-VIEW is not a PACS system. The more data is stored in the local imagebox of iQ-VIEW, the slower the performance may get and the possibility of data inconsistency will increase.
